Invasion: Orchestrated kill manouver

03/11/10  ||  revenant

When I went to Thailand back in 2004, I bought myself a James Bond Omega Speedmaster watch from a street vendor for what was the equivalent of thirty Australian dollars. Don’t worry, I don’t need to be told it’s not a real Omega, I knew that before haggling. It’s not a bad copy though, if you look at it from a distance. Look closer and you will see the small details let it down. For instance on the back, where it should have the inscription “First watch worn on the moon”, mine says “First watch worn on the modl”. Whoops.

The reason I mention this is that if I ever went back to Thailand and found that same street vendor selling CD’s, I can just imagine he’d thrust this disc into my hands and tell me it was Swedish death metal. It isn’t, of course, Invasion come from the US of A. But they sure do a damn fine impression of the Swedish style, in particular the guitars. But then again, he could just as easily sell this off as a Dutch release, as it also bears more than a passing resemblance to the music of Hail of Bullets or Asphyx. Shit, he could even flog this as the new Bolt Thrower release. I mean, fuck, all of these influences are prominent in this release.

So I probably don’t need to say much more to describe the sound. This is crushing old school death metal and, sure as fuck, one thing this album doesn’t come with is originality. Pretty much everything here feels like a copy of something that has already been, from the music to the song titles, themes, cover – everything. That’s not to say this is a bad thing. Fuck, do we really need to constantly re-invent the wheel? Remember nu-metal? No, new doesn’t always mean good, and even though this album isn’t the most original thing you will hear this year, it’s still pretty fucken good.

One thing I should point out is that if you like your production sounding clean, avoid this album. The sound on this album isn’t just dirty, it’s “living in a shit filled trench that’s bombarded by cannon fire daily, blowing the latrine, dead bodies, mud, filth and whatever that yellow stuff was into the air so it rains down to cover me in another layer of blood and shit filled mud” dirty. I needed to take a shower after listening to it. The guitar buzzes constantly through this album, and as much as I like a dirty production, this is probably too much so.

So there you have it. I’m keeping it short today, much like your cock. Like the bands I mentioned above and not worried about the dirty production? Then do yourself a favour and check this shit out. It’s not original, but it’s still a pretty damn good album. Oh, and I should mention my fake Omega still keeps time just fine six years on, so don’t think because something is a copy cat that the quality is not there.
